Quick answer

In JEE Main 2026, 99 percentile needed about 154–190 marks depending on the shift (roughly 165–180 in a typical shift). 95 percentile needed about 97–137 marks, and 90 percentile about 70–103 marks. The General qualifying cutoff for JEE Advanced, 93.41 percentile, worked out to roughly 85–120 marks. Enter your score below for your own range.

Rank = (100 − percentile) × 15,50,000 candidates ÷ 100.

JEE Main marks vs percentile 2026 (by shift difficulty)

This table is built from the shift-wise results of all 18 JEE Main 2026 shifts (10 in January, 8 in April). Because NTA calculates percentile separately for each shift, the marks needed for the same percentile vary with the paper. An easy shift needs more marks, a tough shift fewer.

Marks out of 300 needed in an easy, moderate or tough shift. JEE Main 2026 shift-wise data (18 shifts, Jan + Apr). Ranks assume about 15,50,000 candidates.

How much the shift mattered in 2026: the 99 percentile example

The marks needed for 99 percentile ranged from about 154 marks (22 January, evening) to about 190 marks (5 April, morning), a gap of roughly 36 marks for exactly the same percentile. On average, Session 1 (January) needed slightly fewer marks for the same percentile than Session 2 (April). This is why comparing raw marks with friends from other shifts can be misleading.

Year on year: marks needed for the same percentile

The marks needed for a given percentile move a little each year with paper difficulty and the number of candidates. In 2026, 99 percentile needed slightly fewer marks at the top end than in 2025, whose easiest April shifts needed more than 200.

What JEE Main percentile actually means

Your NTA percentile is the percentage of candidates in your shift who scored equal to or less than you. It is not a percentage of marks. A score of 150 out of 300 is 50%, but in 2026 it put a candidate at roughly the 97th–99th percentile, because most candidates scored lower. NTA reports percentiles to seven decimal places to reduce ties, and the topper of every shift receives 100 percentile.

From percentile to rank

All shifts share one percentile scale, so your All India Rank is approximately (100 − percentile) × total candidates ÷ 100. About 15.5 lakh unique candidates took JEE Main in 2026, so 99 percentile corresponded to a rank of about 15,500 and 95 percentile to about 77,500. Your final rank uses the better of your two session percentiles. Use the percentile calculator to convert either way.

What to expect in JEE Main 2027

  • Percentile to rank will shift only if candidate numbers change. Candidate numbers have grown slowly in recent years, so the same percentile may mean a slightly higher (worse) rank number.
  • Marks for a given percentile depend on paper difficulty, which cannot be predicted in advance. Plan with the moderate-shift column and treat the easy and tough columns as the realistic range.
  • We will update this page with 2027 shift data after each session’s result.

Frequently asked questions

How many marks are needed for 99 percentile in JEE Main?

In 2026 it took about 154–190 marks depending on the shift, and roughly 165–180 marks in a typical shift.

How many marks are needed to qualify for JEE Advanced?

The 2026 General cutoff was 93.4123549 percentile, which needed roughly 85–120 marks depending on the shift. Reserved categories have lower cutoffs: see the official category-wise cutoff.

Why did my friend get a higher percentile with fewer marks?

They were in a tougher shift. Percentile compares you only with candidates in the same shift, so fewer marks in a hard paper can beat more marks in an easy one. Normalization explained.

Does NTA publish a marks vs percentile table?

No. NTA publishes each candidate’s percentile, not a conversion table. The table on this page is compiled from shift-wise result analyses of every 2026 shift.

Is percentile the same as percentage?

No. Percentage is your marks out of 300. Percentile is your position relative to other candidates in your shift.

Method: shift-wise marks vs percentile values for 2026 are compiled from published shift-wise result analyses of all 18 shifts. Rows below 90 percentile are estimates. Read our methodology.
