KCET in short

KCET (Karnataka Common Entrance Test) is conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) for government-quota engineering seats in Karnataka, mainly for Karnataka candidates. It has 180 questions (60 each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics), 1 mark each, with no negative marking. Your engineering rank is based 50% on your KCET score and 50% on your Class 12 PCM marks.

  • Because board marks count for half your rank, Class 12 performance matters much more than in JEE.
  • Seats in private Karnataka colleges are also filled through COMEDK UGET, which is open to candidates from all states.

Official site: cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea. Confirm the year’s eligibility rules (Karnataka candidature) in the KEA information bulletin.

Who should take KCET?

KCET is the route to government-quota engineering seats in Karnataka, which come at much lower fees than management seats. It is mainly for candidates who meet Karnataka candidature rules. Because Class 12 marks count for half the rank, students with strong board scores benefit most.

How the KCET engineering rank is calculated

Your engineering rank combines your KCET score (50%) and your Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics marks (50%). A strong board result can lift your rank significantly even if your CET score is average, and vice versa.

How to prepare for KCET alongside JEE

  • Do not neglect your Class 12 board exam: it is half your KCET rank.
  • Attempt every question; there is no negative marking.
  • Practise speed: 60 questions per subject with direct, NCERT-level questions.
  • Take KCET and COMEDK UGET together to cover both government and private Karnataka seats.
How is the KCET rank calculated?

For engineering, 50% from your KCET score and 50% from your Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics marks.

Is there negative marking in KCET?

No. Each of the 180 questions carries 1 mark and there is no negative marking.

Who conducts KCET?

The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA).

What is the difference between KCET and COMEDK?

KCET fills government-quota seats in Karnataka, mainly for Karnataka candidates; COMEDK UGET fills private college seats and is open to candidates from all states.
