Quick answer

JEE Advanced has two compulsory papers of 3 hours each, held on the same day as a computer-based test in English or Hindi. Each paper has Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics sections. The question types and marking scheme change every year and are revealed only in the paper’s instructions; some questions carry negative marks. In 2026 the total was 360 marks.

MarkingAnnounced in each paper’s instructions; negative marking for some question types

How ranks are decided

  • Only candidates who appear in both papers are ranked.
  • Subject marks = that subject’s marks in Paper 1 + Paper 2; the aggregate is the sum of the three subjects.
  • Ties are broken first by higher positive marks, then by higher marks in Mathematics, then Physics. If still tied, candidates share the rank.

Minimum marks to qualify (get a rank)

You must reach the minimum in each subject and in aggregate for your rank list:

Rank listMinimum in each subjectMinimum aggregate
Common Rank List (CRL)10%35%
GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL9%31.5%
SC, ST and all PwD lists5%17.5%
Preparatory course lists2.5%8.75%

Syllabus (chapter-wise)

The official syllabus is in Annexure I of the information brochure. These are its units; each covers several topics in the brochure.

Physics

  • General (units and dimensions, errors, experiments with Vernier callipers, screw gauge and more)
  • Mechanics
  • Thermal Physics
  • Electricity and Magnetism
  • Electromagnetic Waves
  • Optics
  • Modern Physics

Chemistry

  • Physical: General topics (mole concept), States of Matter, Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, Chemical Thermodynamics, Chemical and Ionic Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Solid State, Solutions, Surface Chemistry
  • Inorganic: Classification of Elements and Periodicity, Hydrogen, s-Block, p-Block (Groups 13–18), d-Block, f-Block, Coordination Compounds, Isolation of Metals, Principles of Qualitative Analysis, Environmental Chemistry
  • Organic: Basic Principles, Alkanes, Alkenes and Alkynes, Benzene, Phenols, Alkyl Halides, Ethers, Aldehydes and Ketones, Carboxylic Acids, Amines, Haloarenes, Biomolecules, Polymers, Chemistry in Everyday Life, Practical Organic Chemistry

Mathematics

  • Sets, Relations and Functions
  • Algebra (complex numbers, quadratic equations, sequences and series, logarithms, permutations and combinations, binomial theorem)
  • Matrices
  • Probability and Statistics
  • Trigonometry
  • Analytical Geometry (two and three dimensions)
  • Differential Calculus
  • Integral Calculus (including differential equations)
  • Vectors

Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT)

B.Arch is offered only at IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee. You must qualify JEE Advanced and then pass the AAT, a single 3-hour paper in English held a few days after the result. There is no separate AAT rank: seats are allotted on your JEE Advanced rank. AAT covers freehand and geometrical drawing, three-dimensional perception, imagination and aesthetic sensitivity, and architectural awareness. In 2026, AAT registration was 1–2 June, the test on 4 June and the result on 7 June.

How many papers are there in JEE Advanced?

Two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, of 3 hours each on the same day. Both are compulsory.

Is there negative marking in JEE Advanced?

Yes, for some question types. The exact scheme is shown in each paper’s instructions and changes from year to year.

What are the minimum marks to qualify JEE Advanced?

For the Common Rank List: 10% in each subject and 35% aggregate. Lower minimums apply to EWS, OBC-NCL (9% and 31.5%) and SC, ST, PwD (5% and 17.5%).

Is the JEE Advanced syllabus the same as JEE Main?

They overlap largely, but JEE Advanced has its own official syllabus and tests deeper problem-solving. Use the units above with the full topic list in the brochure.
