BITSAT in short
BITSAT is the computer-based entrance test for B.E. admission to BITS Pilani’s Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses (BITS Pilani: NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 11). It has 130 questions for 390 marks in 3 hours, with +3 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one. It is held in two sessions, and your better score counts.
Exam pattern
| Section | Questions |
|---|---|
| Physics | 30 |
| Chemistry | 30 |
| English Proficiency | 10 |
| Logical Reasoning | 20 |
| Mathematics (or Biology for B.Pharm) | 40 |
| Total | 130 (390 marks) |
If you answer all 130 questions within the time, you can take 12 bonus questions (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics). Once you choose them, you cannot go back to the main questions. Speed and accuracy matter more than in JEE Main.
Eligibility
- At least 75% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12, with at least 60% in each subject.
- Only students who take Class 12 in the current year or the year before are eligible.
- BITS also offers direct admission to first-rank holders of central and state boards, as per its admission rules for the year.
2026 sessions (for reference)
Session 1 was held on 15–17 April 2026 and Session 2 on 24–26 May 2026. You may take one or both sessions. Check bitsadmission.com for the 2027 schedule and fees.
Who should take BITSAT?
BITSAT suits students who are strong in Class 11–12 PCM fundamentals and can work fast. BITS Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad are among India’s most sought-after private engineering campuses, so BITSAT is a natural second target for JEE aspirants. Because BITSAT does not use JEE Main scores, it gives you an independent chance at a top college.
BITSAT vs JEE Main
| BITSAT | JEE Main (Paper 1) | |
|---|---|---|
| Conducted by | BITS Pilani | NTA |
| Questions / time | 130 in 3 hours (about 1.4 minutes each) | 75 in 3 hours (2.4 minutes each) |
| Marking | +3 / −1 | +4 / −1 |
| Extra sections | English Proficiency and Logical Reasoning | None |
| Attempts | Two sessions; better score counts | Two sessions; better percentile counts |
How to prepare for BITSAT alongside JEE
- Speed over depth: BITSAT questions are usually shorter than JEE Main’s. Practise timed sets of 30 questions in 40 minutes to build pace.
- NCERT first: the syllabus is based on Class 11 and 12 PCM. Chemistry in particular rewards NCERT accuracy.
- Do not ignore English and Logical Reasoning: 30 questions (90 marks) need only a few weeks of practice and lift your score sharply.
- Bonus questions: attempt them only if you finish all 130 with time left, because you cannot return to the main questions.
- Mocks: take at least 8–10 full computer-based mocks in the last month.
Admission after BITSAT
BITS allots seats in iterations based on your BITSAT score and your programme and campus preferences. Each year it publishes the score needed for each programme after the iterations, and these move with the difficulty of the paper. Keep checking the BITS admission site after results.
Is BITSAT harder than JEE Main?
The questions are generally shorter than JEE Main’s, but you have 130 questions in 3 hours with negative marking, so speed is the main challenge.
Does BITS accept JEE Main scores?
No. Admission to BITS B.E. programmes is through BITSAT (and direct admission for board toppers).
What is the BITSAT eligibility?
75% aggregate in PCM in Class 12 with at least 60% in each, passing Class 12 in the current or previous year.
