In short
JEE Main and JEE Advanced are not the only routes into a good engineering college. Private institutes such as BITS (BITSAT) and VIT (VITEEE) run their own exams, and states such as Maharashtra (MHT CET), West Bengal (WBJEE), Karnataka (KCET, COMEDK UGET) and Kerala (KEAM) have their own. Most JEE aspirants take one or two of these as backups; the syllabus overlaps heavily with JEE Main.
