General (OPEN), gender-neutral, Other State seats, final round. "Programmes" counts all institute types, including IITs. Home State and category seats close later.
How to choose a branch
- Interest first: you will study it for four years. Look at the first-year and second-year courses of each branch before deciding.
- Check placements and higher studies on each college page, not just the cutoff. A later-closing branch is not automatically a weaker one.
- Keep options open: many institutes allow a branch change after the first year for top performers, and minors or electives let you add computing skills to a core branch.
- Order your JoSAA choices honestly: put what you would genuinely prefer first. The algorithm never gives you a lower choice if a higher one is available at your rank.
FAQs
Which branch is hardest to get at NITs in JoSAA 2026?
Among branches offered at eight or more NITs, the most competitive by typical (median) Other State closing rank were AI & Data Science (about rank 11,824), Mathematics & Computing (about rank 12,323), CSE (about rank 13,993).
Should I choose a branch or a college?
There is no single right answer. A branch you enjoy matters for four years of study and your first job; a stronger college helps with peers, faculty and placements across branches. Many students compare a core branch at a higher-ranked institute with CSE or ECE at a lower-ranked one, using NIRF rank, placement data and location.
Why do the same branch names close at very different ranks?
Demand follows the institute as much as the branch. CSE at an older, higher-ranked NIT closes far earlier than CSE at a newer NIT, and Home State seats close later than Other State seats.
What minimum JEE Main rank is needed to get any NIT in the General category?
In JoSAA 2026, the last General (OPEN), gender-neutral Other State B.Tech seat at an NIT closed at about rank 64,955 (about 95.81 percentile), in less-demanded branches at newer NITs. Home State, category and female-only seats close much later, so check your own state's NIT.
Lower branch at a top IIT or CSE at a top NIT: which is better?
It depends on what you want. If you are sure you want a software career, CSE at a top NIT gives that path directly. A core branch at an IIT gives a stronger overall brand, alumni network and research options, and many IITs let students add minors or switch branch after the first year on merit. Compare the official placement data on both college pages, and choose a branch you can enjoy for four years.
Is BITS Pilani CS better than CS at a mid-tier IIT?
Both are excellent. BITS offers flexible curricula and the Practice School internship, but has much higher fees and no category reservation; IITs have lower fees with waivers, a strong research culture and the IIT brand. Compare fees, location and placement data rather than rankings alone.
