Quick answer
Boards and JEE share most of the syllabus, so study for JEE at depth and boards are largely covered. What boards add is writing practice (derivations, step marking, diagrams) and NCERT detail. Take a focused board phase of three to five weeks before the board exams, and remember the board result matters: admission to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and IITs needs 75% (65% for SC/ST) or a top-20-percentile board result.
Where they overlap and where they differ
| Board exams | JEE Main | |
|---|---|---|
| Syllabus | NCERT Class 12 (and Class 11 for internal/assessment) | NCERT Class 11 and 12 at problem-solving depth |
| Questions | Written answers, derivations, step marks | Objective and numerical, speed matters |
| Extra subjects | English and your fifth subject | None |
| What it decides | The 75% / top-20-percentile eligibility for admission | Your rank |
A simple yearly balance
- April to November: JEE-depth study covers boards; write one long answer or derivation a day for practice, and keep up with English and the fifth subject weekly.
- December to January: JEE Main Session 1 priority, with board practicals and pre-boards handled as they come.
- Board phase (3–5 weeks before boards): NCERT reading, sample papers and previous board papers, timed writing practice.
- After boards: straight back to JEE for Session 2 and Advanced.
Is the 75% board criteria needed for JEE Main?
Not to write the exam. It is needed for admission to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and IITs: 75% (65% for SC/ST) in Class 12 or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.
How many days do I need for board preparation if I am preparing for JEE?
Usually three to five weeks of focused board practice is enough, because JEE preparation already covers the PCM content. Use it for NCERT details, writing practice and the other subjects.
