Quick answer
For every exam, start with NCERT and add one standard book per subject plus previous-year papers. JEE Advanced needs harder problem books (Irodov, Cengage, Black Book), BITSAT adds English and logical reasoning, IISER IAT adds Biology, and NDA needs Mathematics plus a general ability book. The lists below say what each book is for, so you can buy fewer and finish them.
JEE Main
Our detailed list, with who can skip each book and what to use at each stage: best books for JEE Main. The core: NCERT Class 11–12, H.C. Verma, O.P. Tandon or N. Awasthi, a Cengage or Arihant maths series, and chapter-wise PYQs. JEE Main PYQ books
JEE Advanced
| Book | Use it for | |
|---|---|---|
| Problems in General Physics, I.E. Irodov | The hardest physics problems; pick selected chapters | Amazon |
| Cengage Physics series, B.M. Sharma | JEE Advanced-level theory and graded problems | Amazon |
| Numerical Chemistry, P. Bahadur | Physical chemistry numericals | Amazon |
| Advanced Problems in Organic Chemistry, M.S. Chouhan | Organic reaction practice | Amazon |
| Concise Inorganic Chemistry, J.D. Lee (adapted for JEE) | Inorganic theory in depth | Amazon |
| Advanced Problems in Mathematics, Vikas Gupta (Black Book) | Tough multi-concept maths problems | Amazon |
| JEE Advanced previous-year papers | The most important practice in the last months | Amazon |
BITSAT
BITSAT is fast: 130 questions in 3 hours, plus English proficiency and logical reasoning. Your JEE Main books cover PCM; add a BITSAT practice book for speed and a reasoning book for the extra section. See the BITSAT guide.
- BITSAT Explorer (MTG): solved papers and practice tests. Amazon
- A Modern Approach to Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, R.S. Aggarwal. Amazon
IISER Aptitude Test (IAT)
IAT has equal questions from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics at Class 11–12 level. Use your JEE Main books for PCM and NCERT for Biology, then practise past IAT papers. See the IISER IAT guide.
NDA
- Pathfinder for NDA/NA (Arihant): complete guide for both papers. Amazon
- Mathematics for NDA, R.S. Aggarwal. Amazon
- Lucent’s General Knowledge, for the GAT. Amazon
Exam details: NDA 2027 and other defence entries.
Foundation (Class 8–10)
Younger students should build concepts, not race ahead. NCERT and NCERT Exemplar first, then a foundation series for problem practice. Foundation books NCERT Exemplar
Which are the best books for JEE Main and Advanced?
NCERT, then H.C. Verma and D.C. Pandey for Physics, O.P. Tandon or N. Awasthi for Chemistry and a Cengage or Arihant series for Mathematics. For Advanced add Irodov, P. Bahadur, M.S. Chouhan, J.D. Lee and the Black Book, plus previous-year papers.
Which books are best for BITSAT?
Your JEE Main PCM books plus a BITSAT practice book such as MTG’s BITSAT Explorer, and a reasoning book for the logical reasoning section.
Which books should I read for NDA?
A complete guide such as Arihant’s Pathfinder, R.S. Aggarwal for Mathematics and a general knowledge book such as Lucent’s for the General Ability Test.
Should Class 9 students start JEE books?
Start with NCERT and NCERT Exemplar and a foundation series. Strong basics in Class 9–10 make JEE preparation much easier later.
Is NCERT enough to score 90+ in JEE Main Chemistry?
NCERT is the base and covers most Inorganic Chemistry questions almost word for word, but for 90+ you also need practice in Physical Chemistry numericals and Organic problems, plus chapter-wise PYQs.
HC Verma or Irodov for JEE Advanced Physics?
Both, in that order. HC Verma builds concepts and is enough for JEE Main; Irodov is for selected hard problems once your concepts are strong. Do not start with Irodov.
Is the Black Book (Vikas Gupta) necessary for JEE Advanced Maths?
Not necessary, but useful for students already comfortable with standard problems who want tougher multi-concept practice. Finish a main series and PYQs first.
Is M.S. Chouhan good for JEE Advanced Organic Chemistry?
Yes, it is widely used for Organic practice at Advanced level. Use it after your theory is clear, and do not try to finish every exercise.
Are the last 5 years’ PYQs enough for JEE Mains?
They are the most useful practice, but not enough on their own for a high percentile. Solve as many years of JEE Main PYQs as you can by chapter, along with one book per subject and full mocks.
Can I crack JEE Advanced with self-study and free YouTube material?
Yes, many students do. You need a structured plan, standard books, PYQs and regular full mocks with honest analysis. The hardest part of self-study is discipline and feedback, so take timed tests and get doubts cleared regularly.
Which test series is closest to the real JEE Main paper?
The actual previous years’ JEE Main papers are the closest match; solve them as full timed mocks. NTA also offers free practice tests on its official platforms. Choose any paid test series by the quality of its solutions and analysis, not by its name.
