Quick answer

Indian students can apply abroad straight after Class 12, but each country has its own route: the USA (Common App, SAT/ACT where required, English test, essays; need-based aid at some top universities), the UK (UCAS, strong Class 12 marks, early October deadline for Oxford and Cambridge), Germany (low or no tuition at public universities, but usually a foundation year or JEE Advanced qualification for direct entry, plus an APS certificate), and Singapore, Canada and Australia on Class 12 results and English tests. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, MIT, Stanford, Imperial, Oxford and Harvard are the top five; IIT Delhi is India’s best at 118th.

Global rankings weigh research, reputation surveys and international mix, not undergraduate teaching or placements. For B.Tech in India, the IITs, top NITs and IIITs give excellent value at a fraction of the cost: compare official placement data before deciding.

How many Indian students go abroad

Ministry of External Affairs data presented to Parliament in 2025 put Indian students abroad at about 18 lakh, of whom about 12.5 lakh were in higher education. The largest numbers were in Canada (about 4.3 lakh), the USA (about 2.6 lakh) and the UK (about 1.7 lakh), with Germany around 50,000 in higher education. Outbound numbers fell in 2025 after visa and work-permit tightening in several countries, so check each country’s current visa and post-study work rules.

A realistic plan for JEE students

  1. Decide by Class 11. US applications need SAT scores, essays and activities prepared during Class 11–12, alongside JEE.
  2. Keep JEE as your base. The same Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics serve both, and a good JoSAA seat is a strong fallback.
  3. Budget honestly. Add tuition, living costs, insurance and travel for four years, and compare with scholarships and financial aid offered, not just admission.
  4. Consider going abroad for a master’s. Many students do a B.Tech in India and an MS abroad, where funding through assistantships is more common.
  5. Use only official sources and portals. Be wary of agents who charge for “guaranteed admission”.
Can I study abroad after 12th science in India?

Yes. Apply directly for a bachelor’s degree using your Class 12 results plus the tests each country requires, such as SAT/ACT for many US universities and IELTS or TOEFL for English. Germany usually needs a foundation year or JEE Advanced qualification for direct entry.

Which exams are needed to study abroad after 12th?

Typically an English test (IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo) and, for many US universities, the SAT or ACT. Some UK courses have their own admissions tests. Germany requires an APS certificate for Indian applicants.

Can I study abroad for free after 12th?

Public universities in Germany charge little or no tuition, and a few US universities give need-based aid that can cover full costs for admitted international students. Living costs still apply in both cases.

Is JEE Advanced accepted by foreign universities?

Some universities consider it. In Germany, JEE Advanced qualification can count toward direct entry for related subjects (check the DAAD admission database), and some Singapore programmes consider JEE scores.

What is IIT Delhi’s world ranking?

118th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, the highest of any Indian institution, followed by IIT Bombay (134th) and IIT Madras (170th).
