Quick answer
Your JEE Main rank itself can take you into the forces straight after Class 12: the Indian Army’s 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme and the Indian Navy’s 10+2 B.Tech Cadet Entry shortlist candidates for the SSB interview using the JEE Main rank, and train you as an engineer officer at government cost. After a B.Tech, DRDO recruits scientists mainly through GATE scores, ISRO through its own written test, BARC through its OCES/DGFS selection, and PSUs such as ONGC, NTPC and IOCL largely through GATE.
Straight after Class 12, using JEE Main
| Entry | Who can apply | Selection |
|---|---|---|
| Indian Army 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme (TES) | Unmarried men, Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (at least 60% aggregate in PCM), who appeared in JEE Main that year | Shortlisting on JEE Main rank, SSB interview and medical; engineering degree and commission as an officer |
| Indian Navy 10+2 B.Tech Cadet Entry | Unmarried men and women with high PCM marks and English marks as set in the notification | Shortlisting on JEE Main rank (CRL), SSB interview and medical; 4-year B.Tech at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala |
Both entries are notified twice a year on joinindianarmy.nic.in and joinindiannavy.gov.in, with age limits and exact marks in each notification. A better JEE Main rank improves your chance of an SSB call: check what your marks mean on marks vs percentile.
After B.Tech: DRDO, ISRO, BARC
- DRDO Scientist ‘B’: recruited by the Recruitment and Assessment Centre (rac.gov.in) mainly on a valid GATE score in the relevant discipline, followed by an interview. A first-class B.E./B.Tech is usually required.
- ISRO Scientist/Engineer ‘SC’: through ISRO’s Centralised Recruitment Board written test and interview, announced on isro.gov.in.
- BARC (Department of Atomic Energy): through the OCES/DGFS training schemes, with selection by an online exam or GATE score followed by an interview. Trainees are paid during a year of training before joining as scientific officers.
PSUs and government engineering services
- PSUs (public sector companies such as ONGC, NTPC, IOCL, BHEL, POWERGRID and GAIL) mostly shortlist engineers by GATE score, then hold interviews or group discussions.
- UPSC Engineering Services Examination (ESE) for Group A engineering posts in railways, defence engineering, telecom, central water and other services.
- State engineering services through state public service commissions.
Your branch decides which GATE paper and which jobs you can aim for, so choose it with care: see cutoffs by branch and official placement data on college pages. For research careers, read how to become a scientist.
Can I join the Army with my JEE Main rank?
Yes, through the Indian Army 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme: unmarried men with at least 60% in PCM who appeared in JEE Main can apply, and shortlisting for the SSB is based on the JEE Main rank.
How do I join DRDO as a scientist?
After a first-class B.E./B.Tech (or relevant master’s), apply for DRDO Scientist ‘B’ through rac.gov.in. Selection is mainly on a valid GATE score followed by an interview.
How do I become an ISRO scientist after B.Tech?
Apply when ISRO’s Centralised Recruitment Board announces Scientist/Engineer ‘SC’ posts. Selection is through a written test and interview.
Is GATE needed for PSU jobs?
For most large PSUs, yes: they shortlist engineering graduates on GATE scores. Some PSUs also hold their own recruitment exams.
