Quick answer
B.Tech tuition is ₹2 lakh a year at IITs and ₹1.25 lakh a year at NITs. Under the central fee rules, SC, ST and PwD students pay no tuition, and General, EWS and OBC-NCL students also pay none if family income is below ₹1 lakh a year, or one third if it is ₹1–5 lakh. Hostel, mess and institute fees are extra. Families can also use scholarships and the government’s PM-Vidyalaxmi collateral-free education loans.
Tuition fee calculator
Tuition only. Hostel, mess, one-time and annual institute fees are extra and differ by institute. IIITs and GFTIs set their own fees.
Tuition at IITs and NITs by category and family income
| Student | IIT tuition a year | NIT tuition a year |
|---|---|---|
| SC / ST / PwD | Nil | Nil |
| General, EWS, OBC-NCL: family income below ₹1 lakh | Nil (full remission) | Nil (full remission) |
| General, EWS, OBC-NCL: family income ₹1–5 lakh | About ₹66,667 (one third) | About ₹41,667 (one third) |
| General, EWS, OBC-NCL: family income above ₹5 lakh | ₹2,00,000 | ₹1,25,000 |
Remission covers tuition only. Each institute publishes its own fee notice every year with the exact amounts and the documents it needs, so always check it before paying. IIITs, GFTIs, state and private colleges set their own fees.
A real example: NIT Trichy, 2025 batch
From NIT Trichy’s official fee structure for the 2025 admission batch (General, EWS and OBC-NCL), excluding hostel and mess:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | ₹62,500 every semester (₹5,00,000 over 8 semesters) |
| Annual institute fees (library, exams, computer, sports, medical and others) | ₹25,150 in year 1, rising to ₹33,450 in year 4 |
| One-time fees at admission | ₹35,300, including ₹9,100 of refundable deposits |
| Total institute fees over 4 years | ₹6,52,100 without remission; about ₹1,52,100 with full tuition remission |
Hostel rent and mess charges are paid separately, usually every semester, and vary by hostel and campus. Ask for the current hostel fee notice when you report.
Other costs to plan for
- JoSAA seat acceptance fee: paid online when you accept an allotted seat, lower for SC/ST/PwD, and adjusted against your institute fees. The amount and refund rules are in each year’s JoSAA brochure.
- Hostel and mess: the largest cost after tuition at most institutes.
- Laptop, books and stationery.
- Travel to campus at the start and end of each semester. Each college page lists the nearest airport and railway station.
- Personal expenses and medical insurance, if not included in the institute fees.
How to get the fee waiver
- Get a family income certificate for the previous financial year from the competent authority in your state (for example, the tehsildar or revenue office). Some institutes ask for certificates for both parents.
- Submit it at admission, by the date in the institute’s fee notice. Some institutes collect full tuition first and refund the difference after verification.
- Renew it every year: remission is checked each academic year.
- An EWS or OBC-NCL certificate is not the same as an income certificate for remission; you may need both.
Scholarships
- Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships for students above the 80th percentile of their Class 12 board with family income up to ₹4.5 lakh, applied through the National Scholarship Portal.
- Post-matric scholarships for SC, ST and OBC students, through the National Scholarship Portal or your state’s scholarship portal.
- State schemes: many states reimburse fees or give scholarships to residents studying in or outside the state. Check your state’s portal.
- Institute scholarships: most IITs and NITs offer merit-cum-means or need-based scholarships. Ask the scholarship section after admission.
- AICTE Pragati and Saksham (for girls and for specially-abled students) apply to AICTE-approved colleges, which includes most state and private engineering colleges.

Education loans and PM-Vidyalaxmi
Approved by the Union Cabinet on 6 November 2024, PM-Vidyalaxmi gives collateral-free and guarantor-free education loans to students who get merit admission to a listed quality higher education institution (selected on NIRF rankings, including all IITs and NITs). Key terms:
- 3% interest subvention during the moratorium period on loans up to ₹10 lakh, for families earning up to ₹8 lakh a year (up to one lakh fresh students a year, who are not taking another scholarship or interest subvention).
- 75% government credit guarantee for loans up to ₹7.5 lakh, which helps banks lend without collateral.
- Families earning up to ₹4.5 lakh can get full interest subvention during the moratorium under the separate PM-USP Central Sector Interest Subsidy scheme for technical courses.
- Apply to banks through the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal after you have an admission letter.
Compare the total cost with official placement figures before borrowing: every college page shows the median salary filed with NIRF. Start from the NIT or IIT list, or shortlist with the college predictor.
