How to Use JEE Main Previous Year Questions (PYQs)

A two-phase plan for chapter-wise and full-paper PYQs, how many years to use, and the mistakes to avoid.

Quick answer

Use previous-year questions in two phases: chapter-wise right after you finish each chapter (all available JEE Main years for that chapter), and full papers in the last two to three months as timed mocks. Re-solve every question you got wrong a week later. Recent years matter most because they follow the current syllabus and pattern.

Phase 1: chapter-wise PYQs (during the year)

  1. Finish the chapter’s theory and basic exercises.
  2. Solve all JEE Main PYQs of that chapter from a chapter-wise collection, without looking at solutions, in timed sets of 10–15.
  3. Mark each as solved, solved slowly, or wrong. Log the wrong ones in your error log.
  4. One week later, re-solve only the wrong and slow ones.

Phase 2: full papers (last 2–3 months)

  • Take recent full papers as mocks at your exam time, three hours, no breaks.
  • Analyse each the same day with the mock tracker.
  • Keep the most recent year’s papers for the final three or four weeks.

How many years?

Chapter-wise, use every JEE Main year your collection has for that chapter, skipping questions on topics removed from the current syllabus. For full papers, recent years are the best simulation: the pattern changed in 2025 (all 75 questions compulsory, with negative marking on numerical questions), so treat older papers as chapter practice rather than full simulations. JEE Advanced aspirants should also do Advanced PYQs chapter-wise after finishing Main-level practice.

Common mistakes with PYQs

  • Saving all PYQs for the end, then rushing them without analysis.
  • Reading solutions instead of solving; you remember the answer, not the method.
  • Ignoring topics removed from the syllabus: check each question against the current syllabus.
Are PYQs enough to score 99 percentile in JEE Main?

PYQs are the single best practice, but for 99 percentile you also need one standard book per subject and regular full mocks. PYQs show you the level; the books build the depth.

Where can I get official JEE Main papers?

NTA publishes question papers and answer keys for recent sessions on its website. Chapter-wise compilations in books are convenient for phase 1.

Should I solve PYQs chapter-wise or year-wise?

Both: chapter-wise while learning, year-wise as full timed papers in the final months.
