JoSAA Documents Required: Checklist for NIT+ and IIT Seats

The documents JoSAA asks for at NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and IITs, certificate validity rules for OBC-NCL and EWS, and a checklist you can tick off.

Quick answer

For a NIT, IIIT or GFTI seat you upload: proof of date of birth, your Class 12 marksheet and certificate, JEE Main admit card, category certificate (if any), PwD certificate (if any), a bank cheque or passbook image and the JoSAA medical certificate. For IITs the list is similar, with the JEE Advanced formats. OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be recent: in 2026, issued on or after 1 April 2026, or online-verifiable and valid into the admission period.

Certificate rules that catch students out

  • OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be current. In JoSAA 2026 they had to be issued on or after 1 April 2026, or be government-issued and verifiable online with validity until 31 August 2026 for NIT+ (21 July 2026 for IITs). Apply early: issuing offices are busy in May and June.
  • Use the Government of India (central) format for category certificates, not a state format, when admission is to central institutes.
  • Maharashtra SC/ST/OBC-NCL candidates need a caste validity certificate; Tamil Nadu ST certificates must be issued by the Revenue Divisional Officer.
  • Certificates not in English or Hindi need a certified English or Hindi translation.
  • Officials also check the special eligibility conditions of every choice up to the allotted one, such as minimum Class 12 marks.
  • Respond to queries quickly. If an uploaded document is rejected, you get a query in your JoSAA login; missing the deadline cancels the seat.

Next steps: JoSAA counselling guide, Freeze, Float or Slide, and fees and the income certificate for fee waivers.

Which documents are required for JoSAA?

Proof of date of birth, Class 12 marksheet (and certificate for NIT+), JEE Main admit card (NIT+), category and PwD certificates if applicable, bank details for refunds and the medical certificate in the prescribed format.

Is my old OBC-NCL certificate valid for JoSAA?

Usually not. In 2026 it had to be issued on or after 1 April 2026 or be an online-verifiable government certificate valid into the admission period. Get a fresh one in the year of admission.

What happens if my document is rejected?

JoSAA raises a query in your login. Upload a correct document by the deadline; otherwise the seat is cancelled.
