Engineering Admission for North East Students: NITs, IIITs and Scholarships

Home State seats at the eight North East NITs close at far later ranks. Closing ranks, other institutes, Assam CEE and scholarships.

Quick answer

Students from the North East have a real advantage: each of the eight NITs in the region keeps about half its seats for students of its own state (Home State quota), and these seats close at much later ranks. In JoSAA 2026, Computer Science on Home State seats closed beyond rank 1,00,000 at several NE NITs, compared with about 14,000–43,000 on Other State seats. Add IIT Guwahati, three IIITs, central universities, and state counselling such as Assam CEE.

JoSAA 2026 final round, General (OPEN), gender-neutral closing ranks. Home State seats are only for candidates whose Class 12 is from that state.

The Home State quota is decided by the state from which you passed Class 12, not where you were born. If you studied Class 12 outside your home state, check the JoSAA business rules on the state code of eligibility before choice filling.

Other central institutes in the North East

State counselling in the North East

  • Assam: B.Tech seats in Assam’s state engineering colleges are filled mainly through the Assam CEE, conducted by Assam Science and Technology University (ASTU). It is a separate exam with its own application, usually in spring.
  • Other states: some states fill seats in their own colleges, or nominate students to seats outside the state, through their directorate of technical education. Check your state’s directorate notices in May–June.

Scholarships for North East students

  • UGC Ishan Uday special scholarship for students from the North Eastern Region in undergraduate courses, including technical and professional courses, for families below an income limit. Apply on the National Scholarship Portal.
  • Post-matric scholarships for ST, SC and OBC students, and fee waivers at IITs and NITs: see fees, scholarships and loans.

Shortlist with the college predictor using your home state: it includes Home State quotas automatically. Then build your list in the JoSAA choice-list builder.

Which NIT is best for North East students with a low rank?

Your own state’s NIT on the Home State quota usually gives the best branch at a given rank. Compare the Home State closing ranks in the table above with your rank, and look at all branches on the college page.

Is there a North East quota in NITs?

The main benefit is the Home State quota: about half the seats at each NIT go to students who passed Class 12 from that state. Category and female-only seats apply within it.

Do I need JEE Main for NERIST and Tezpur University?

Their B.Tech seats listed here are allotted through JoSAA on JEE Main rank. Some universities also run other programmes with separate admission rules, so check the institute website.

What scholarships are there for North East students?

The UGC Ishan Uday scholarship for the North Eastern Region, post-matric scholarships for SC/ST/OBC students, and tuition fee waivers at IITs and NITs based on category and family income.
